Our History
The Aveda Institute Des Moines is owned and operated by V.P. Institute, Inc. Our faculty is a skilled team of experienced educators with knowledge of classic and contemporary techniques. They meet state licensing requirements and are trained in all the aspects of hair, skin and esthetics, body care and related subjects. The Aveda Institute Des Moines is a Cosmetology, Esthiology, and Massage Therapy school, approved and licensed by the State of Iowa, and accredited by the National Accrediting Commission of Career Arts and Sciences.

The Cosmetology Courses You'll Be Taking

Cosmetology at Aveda Institute Des Moines is the art and science of enhancing beauty for both men and women. Our program includes instruction in the care of hair, nails and skin. Students will learn hair design, color, cutting and styling and will apply this knowledge to mannequins, live models and guests. The care of healthy nails, manicure, pedicure, and table set-up is also taught. Skin care, facial waxing, and face color is the finishing touch of the Aveda experience.
Courses
Hair/Body Systems Theory
Students learn about hair structure, electricity, chemistry, anatomy of the head, face and body, and muscle systems.
Sanitation
Safety and sanitation techniques and requirements are discussed.
Iowa Law
Students learn about Iowa laws, rules, safety and sanitation requirements in order to prepare them for the Iowa State licensing written exams.
Hair and Scalp Treatments
Product analysis, procedures and techniques, client hair analysis, application techniques, equipment,
implements and materials are studied.
Hair Shaping
Students observe demonstrations in hair cutting and shaping, and gain hands-on training in implements and techniques, sections, handling of shears, clippers and razors, and client consultation.
Hair Arranging
Students learn about hair styling, wet styling, finger waving, and pin curl techniques, and obtain hands-on training with roller curls, comb out techniques, artistry in hair styling, thermal styling, conventional thermal irons, and blow dry styling.
Chemical Waving and Relaxing
Lectures on permanent restructuring theory of hair, chemistry of solutions, and pre-perm analysis are discussed while students receive hands-on training in rod selection, perming techniques, custom perm design and wrapping.
Hair Coloring
Students gain an understanding of color theory, classifications of hair color, product analysis, and corrective coloring before they receive hands-on experience in contemporary techniques, one dimensional/multidimensional, foiling, bleach and tone.
Skin Care/Hair Removal
Histology, disorders, facials, skin care, and waxing are discussed and practiced.
Manicuring/Pedicuring
Each student will experience manicures and pedicures, nail design and artistry, acrylic nails, nail extensions, massage techniques
for the hands, arm and feet with a hands-on approach.
Precision Trends in Haircutting
Emphasis on Aveda techniques to create any hair design is stressed. Students also learn to identify the latest trends and skills
necessary to develop hairstyles using precision cuts.
Precision Trends in Hair Shaping
Emphasis on trends of professional hairstyling that enhance and contribute to a client’s overall look. Each students will learn to identify trends and utilize the skills needed to develop hairstyles based on length, genre, and texture within a creative approach to producing new styles.
Advanced Hair Coloring
Students focus on layering hair coloring techniques to achieve the desired look. Aveda Collections are taught and an emphasis on advanced use of foil patterns is stressed throughout the course.
Make Up
Students acquire hands-on training in make up application with attention to eye shapes. Bridal and mature make up techniques, as well as photo ready make up applications are also discussed and practiced.
Aveda Rituals
Students learn how to perform the Aveda 12 points of difference. Stress relieving rituals, aromatherapy, sensory, journeys, finishing touch procedure and massage techniques are also utilized in class.
Personal and Business Development
Students hone their interviewing skills and gain an understanding of career success strategy, resume writing, and professional consultations.
Retailing, Sales and Management Development
Preparation in retailing and business management are stressed throughout the course. Students learn the fundamentals of sales and management as they apply to a retailing atmosphere. Students are required to participate in hair shows, an annual field trip to advanced their education, and offer services at events.
