What You’ll Experience
As an Aveda Institute Tucson Student you’ll experience extensive education through photo shoots, education workshops from industry masters, leadership, community events, and wellness. Experience Fashion-Beauty-Wellness-Art. Experience the Aveda difference.
During your program you’ll work with a model to create hair and makeup themed for your own photo shoot with a professional photographer. Images from this shoot can be used to begin your professional portfolio, setting a foundation for editorial work.
Be a mentor and inspire yourself and others to become the best. Our leadership team allows students to participate in committee meetings and events. Additionally, students interview for the Premier Talent program during the final phase of the program.
Hair & Makeup Shows
Be your own fashion designer at our hair & makeup shows which are hosted twice a year to raise proceeds for local charities and our Earth Month partner. From the behind the scenes planning to creating the hair style and makeup for the models, you’ll be involved in every aspect of the show.
Institute huddles to host a wellness assembly to celebrate successes, honor day makers, review upcoming events and experience a wellness activity to set the tone for a great day at Aveda.
The Education team hosts a workshop for students to hone-in on favorite practices or to improve technical skills. Workshops vary from styling and cutting techniques to makeup lessons, waxing and skin care. Our Experience Center also works closely with students to improve upon retailing, product knowledge and reservations.
Aveda Institute invites the industry’s top professionals to teach a seminar in the field in which they specialize. This includes Hair, Make Up, Skin Care, Franklin Covey and more.

The Cosmetology Program Curriculum
The following instructional methods are used during the course of the Cosmetology program:
- Hands-On Training
- Group Study
- One-on-One Coaching
Students are required to attend class Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm for a weekly total of 33 hours.
Phase One – 9 weeks
Students are introduced to the fundamentals of:
- Hair coloring
- Hair cutting
- Hair styling
- Facial makeup
- Facial hair removal
- Time management
- Interpersonal skills
- Safe work practices
Students also learn Arizona State laws, regulations, and safety requirements.
Phase Two – 9 weeks
During this phase, strengthening cutting and coloring skills are emphasized. Students focus on reviewing and practicing techniques learned in class as well as combining techniques to achieve new results. Students also learn nail care as well as Manicure and Pedicure procedures.
Phase Three – 9 weeks
Part 1: This phase is all about Skin Care. The philosophy of Aveda Elemental Nature is incorporated into every facial treatment. Students also learn:
- Skin analysis
- Spa rituals
- Layers of the skin
By the end of this phase of the program, students will have been trained in basic facial techniques and artificial nail techniques.
Part 2: The Art and Science of Chemical Texture is the focus of this phase. Students learn and practice various perming techniques. Procedures for safely and effectively chemically relaxing highly textured hair are taught as well.
Phase Four – 9 weeks
Part 1: Advanced techniques in Cut, Color, and Styling are taught during this phase of the Cosmetology program. Students build upon the foundation of techniques they have learned during the previous three phases and take their styling skills to the next level. During this phase, students are introduced to the latest techniques used in the industry as well as the newest Aveda Collections.
Part 2: Professionalism and business is emphasized in order to give students the skills and information necessary to create a dynamic resume and focus on their future success in the cosmetology career field.
Phase Five – 9 weeks
The objective of this phase of the Cosmetology program is to prepare each student for the Arizona State Board Written and Practical Competency Exams. Students explore the Arizona State Board, kit building, and state board testing, preparing them for the Arizona State Board Competency exams. During this time, students practice different Practical Exam scenarios. They are also tested on their knowledge of theoretical principles based on the requirements set by the Arizona State Board of Cosmetology. During this phase, students are also given the opportunity to tour local salons and prepare for the interview process.
Phase Six – 100+ hours
Premiere Talent and Specialized Techniques are the focus of this phase of the program. Students learn important business-building skills, guest retention, and techniques that will help them become successful stylists. The length of this phase is determined by how many hours each student needs to complete the minimum 1600 hours required for state licensure.
Many Aveda Institutes utilize the 4MAT Learning System in their programs. 4MAT is a guide for assessing student growth through the course of a lesson. 4MAT shows how a learner perceives and processes information, defines learning styles, and determines if you are a right brain or left brain learner.
